    Yes, that is a brilliant explanation. It was a breakthrough for me today as I shaved 20 seconds off my split just by doing it.

    Whoa. Big caveat. Pause at the catch works if athlete already has sufficient balance. If not, then they’re hooking the water and doing the *opposite*, dropping the hands to get clear.

    Just learning to row a single and because I'm short, it's a struggle. My coach told me I should not carry it at my waist, even though that's by far the easiest and most stable way for me to do it. Any thoughts on that?

    Pads are great for adjusting some backsides to some seats, etc, but to how do 1/2” pads help with those common large height variations between kids? It’s mostly height at the oar lock, no?

  • @andyhall7032
    @andyhall7032 13 днів тому

    "you can't place the blade on the way forward..." hmm...I think the concept of "backing it in" suggests that you _do_ effectively raise your hands at the _final_ movement forward of the recovery...there is _always_ going to be some form of non-ideal contact between the blade and the water...but rather a very small amount on the back of the blade as opposed to not being locked on and then checking the boat...right ?

      It's a spectrum. Both ends are slow with a sweet spot inbetween.

    Rowing with your left hand just slightly in front is also another very good way to balance the boat.

  • @Nill757
    @Nill757 15 днів тому

    True for most rowers. Some high level elites can catch (get the blade in) a moment *before* they reach full slide position, ie still coming forward.

    Same idea when you're doing flutter kicks, if your foot comes to high or out of the water, you end up just lifting water/fanning air with your foot

  • @andyhall7032

    I lot of people refer to "just covering the spoon" or "just keep the blade where it naturally sits in the water" so hearing the opinion to place the blade quite deep is certainly different...would it not potentially cause issue with the extraction ?

    • @DecentRowing
      @DecentRowing 17 днів тому

      Not many people can hold the blade deep in the water around the finish, as the hands tend to draw down naturally around the finish. In theory, this can cause issues, but in practice, it usually comes out without incident.

    Just to get it right ... question: Does this guy in the vid want say, that the force onto the shoulders at the beginning of the catch should be avoided, instead the oars should be guided by the arms with a circular movement around the pivet points of the oar gates to guide the blades and acceleration force into the horizontal direction during the push by the legs ? (Rec.: Coach Aram (Biorower) from Austria here about has some good videos to avoid the stress onto the weak muscles in the shoulder/back using the arms to move circular around the pivet points instead in a straight line while the legs do their work)

  • @rodneywood3593
    @rodneywood3593 21 день тому

    I could be wrong, but listening to the ergo engagement, it seems to only start when the body and arms take over and the legs seem a little lost!

    • @beepblopborp
      @beepblopborp 20 днів тому

      It's not *starting* then, the fan is just moving fastest when you're hearing it. Same in the boat - it's moving fastest during the recovery.

  • @RonRohnson-xd1cm
    @RonRohnson-xd1cm 21 день тому

    Surely that’s just the difference in total power, her splits dropped nearly 40 seconds. At that slower first pace how can you still apply that acceleration if the total force is so low?

  • @micheldriessen5081

    When balance is really bad, it pays off to slide your oars over the water on the recovery, forcing the boat to stay level and the rowers to catch the next stroke in a level boat. After a while you will see that the other rowers adjust their handle heights to row much better and faster. Of course your contribution has to be correct.

    Lots of great elements to like here, however I would caution against the "straight back rocker" message to athletes. According to physics it can induce a separation of the lower vertebrae leading to back issues. "relax and fold" out of the back of the stroke is a better message.
